today, we are very delighted to come to johannesburg, south africa to discuss matters of economic and trade cooperation and development with all of you. as we all know, south africa is known as the “rainbow nation” and johannesburg is referred to as the “city of gold”. we are dazzled by the beauty of this nation and city. first of all, on behalf of the delegation of guangzhou, china, i would like to extend our enthusiastic welcome and heartfelt thanks to honorable guests and friends who attend this forum of economic and trade cooperation!

近年来，在中国和南非双方高层领导人的推动下，中国与南非双边贸易发展迅速，呈现出良好的发展势头。XX年，尽管中南两国经济都受到了国际金融危机的冲击，但双边贸易额仍然达到了256亿美元，增幅近83%。目前，南非成为中国在非洲的第二大贸易伙伴，中国跃升为南非的最大贸易伙伴。在投资领域，截至XX年，中国累计对南非投资约70亿美元，南非企业在中国的投资约为55亿美元。

in recent years, with supports from high-level cadres and leaders of china and south africa, the bilateral trade between china and south africa has been developing rapidly, showing satisfactory tendency for growth. in XX, the economies of china and south africa were shocked by the international financial crisis. however, both countries still realized 25.6 billion u.s dollars of bilateral trade volumes, a year-to-year increase of nearly 83%. for the moment, south africa has become the second largest trade partner of china in africa, and china has become the largest trade partner of south african. in the field of investment, up to XX, china had accumulatively invested about 7 billion u.s dollars in south africa, and enterprises from south africa had accumulatively invested about 5.5 billion u.s dollars in china.

作为中国重要的对外开放门户城市广州，近年来与南非的经贸往来飞速发展。XX年，广州与南非的进出口贸易达到14.42亿美元，同比增长68.1%。其中，广州出口到南非的商品总额为3.06亿美元，增长33.3%，从南非进口11.36亿美元，增长80.8%。由此可见，双方的经贸合作是卓有成效的，是在经济全球化背景下实现互利共赢的又一典范!

guangzhou acts as an important window for china's reform and opening-up to the outside world. in recent years, the economic and trade relation between guangzhou and south africa has realized high-speed development. in XX, the trade volume of import and export between guangzhou and south africa reached 1.442 billion u.s dollars, a year-to-year increase of 68.1%. among them, the total volume of commodities exported to south africa from guangzhou was 306 million u.s dollars, a year-to-year increase of 33.3%; the total volume of commodities imported to guangzhou from south africa was 1.136 billion u.s dollars, a year-to-year increase of 80.8%. thus it can be seen that the economic and trade cooperation between both sides not only is highly successful, but also is a new model in which mutual benefit and win-win situation are realized under the background of economic globalization!

——广州历史悠久，商贸发达。广州是一座有着2220多年悠久历史的文化名城，是中国古代“海上丝绸之路”的始发港， 1000多年前已进入世界重要港口行列。举世闻名的中国第一展—“中国进出口商品交易会”(“广交会”)就在广州举行，目前已成功举办109届。去年被《福布斯》评为“XX年中国大陆最佳商业城市”。目前，广州正致力于拓展国际商贸合作，加快推进国际商贸中心建设。

---guangzhou boasts long history and sophisticated business and trade. guangzhou is a famous historical and cultural city with over 2,220 years of history. it was the first port of departure of the ancient “maritime silk road” of china. as early as more than 1,000 years ago, guangzhou had become one of the most important ports in the world. the “china import and export fair” (“canton fair”), which is world-famous and deemed as the “no.1 fair in china”, is held in guangzhou. up to now, 109 sessions of china import and export fair have been successfully conducted. last year, guangzhou was named by forbes china magazine as china’s best city for business. at present, guangzhou is devoted to expanding international business and trade cooperation and speeding up the construction of the city as a center for international business and trade.

——广州区位优越，交通便利。广州是中国经济最发达地区之一广东省的省会，是中国五大国家中心城市之一，中国的“南大门”，处于珠江三角洲中心位置，毗邻香港澳门，靠近东南亚，航空距离北京、上海、新加坡2--3小时，距离台北1小时，距离东京、迪拜、悉尼4-—5小时，位于这些金融中心、转口贸易港的几何中心。广州白云国际机场、广州港、广州火车南站等现代化交通枢纽构成了强大的海陆空交通网络。XX年，广州机场旅客吞吐量突破4000万人次，跻身世界空港前15名;广州港货物和集装箱吞吐量分别突破4亿吨和1200万标箱，分别居世界港口第5位和第7位。

---guangzhou has location advantage and good traffic network. guangzhou is the provincial capital of guangdong province, one of the most economically developed regions in china. as one of the five major key cities in china and china's “southern gate”, guangzhou is located in the central part of the pearl river delta. it is adjacent to hong kong and macau and near southeast asia. the distances between guangzhou and beijing, shanghai as well as singapore can be covered in 2 to 3 hours by air; the distance between guangzhou and taipei can be covered in 1 hour by air; the distances between guangzhou and tokyo, dubai as well as sydney can be covered in 4 to 5 hours by air. guangzhou is located in the geometrical center of these financial centers and entrepot ports. a powerful network of ocean, land and air transportations has been formed by modernized transportation hubs such as the guangzhou baiyun airport, guangzhou port and guangzhou south railway station. in XX, the number of incoming and outgoing passengers in guangzhou baiyun airport surmounted 40 million, helping guangzhou to become one of the top 15 air ports in the world; the volume of incoming and outgoing goods and standard containers respectively surmounted 400 million tons and 12 million. guangzhou was the no.5 in terms of goods and no.7 in terms of standard containers among ports in the world.

---guangzhou is characterized by economic prosperity and comfortable living conditions. in the recent 5 years, the increase of the economic aggregate of guangzhou has been rmb 100 billion yuan per annum and the average year-to-year growth rate has been 13%. in XX, the gdp of guangzhou reached rmb 1.060448 trillion yuan, which equals to about 160 billion u.s dollars. in XX, the total import and export volume of guangzhou surmounted 100 billion u.s dollars. commodities produced in guangzhou have been exported to over 200 countries and regions, forming a good model for china's reform and opening-up to the outside world. with the unique city pattern of “mountain, urban area, water, farmland and sea”, guangzhou has long enjoyed the good reputation of “city of flowers”. in XX, the 16th asian games and the 1st asian para games were successfully held in guangzhou. the city environment of guangzhou has gone through dramatic change and become comfortable and agreeable. becoming more and more suitable for living and business activities, guangzhou is ranked as the city with the greatest feeling of happiness in china.

johannesburg is not only the largest city and economic center of south africa, but is also the largest gold-producing center in the world. the city boasts economic prosperity and good traffic network. the potential for the cooperation between guangzhou and johannesburg is extensive and both sides have a great many advantages for cooperation. one phenomenon which is worthy of special mention is that there are lots of friends from africa doing business in guangzhou. when our african friends wish to seek for business opportunities in china, most of them will set guangzhou as the no.1 priority. under the background of favorable foreign relations between china and south africa, we must strengthen our intercourse of economy and trade. it is expected that, with our joint efforts, the economic and trade cooperation between both sides will scale new heights.

一是双方互利共赢，具有良好的合作基础。中国和南非虽然相隔千山万水，但是自从1998年建交以来，双方在政治、经济、文化等领域的合作呈现出飞速发展的势头，特别是最近南非加入了“金砖”国家行列，中南两国将在国际舞台上发挥重要作用，相互帮助，互利合作，共赢发展，奠定了双方开展全面合作的坚实基础。

first of all, both sides have set a satisfactory foundation for cooperation, mutual benefit and win-win situation. there may be thousands of mountains and rivers between china and south africa, which are far away from each other. however, since 1998, the year in which the governments of both countries established diplomatic relations, the cooperation between both countries in the fields of politics, economy and culture, etc has been developing at very fast speed. in particular, south africa has recently become a new member of the “brics”. it is expected that china and south africa will play more important roles in the world scene. let's cooperate with and help each other to achieve mutual benefit and win-win situation. in this way, we will be able to set a solid foundation for comprehensive cooperation between both sides.

二是双方优势互补，具有广阔的合作前景。广州的汽车及零部件、石油化工、现代装备、船舶制造、航空产业等先进制造业发达;广州的金融保险、商贸会展、信息服务、文化创意等现代服务业发展迅猛;新一代信息技术、生物工程、新材料、新能源与节能环保、新能源汽车、海洋工程等战略性新兴产业快速发展。南非则在金属制品、珠宝、矿产品等产业具有比较优势，双方在产业和产品结构上具有很强的互补性，合作潜力巨大。

secondly, both sides have complementary advantages, showing extensive prospect for cooperation. guangzhou boasts well-developed and advanced manufacturing industries, such as the industries of automobile and its spare parts, petrochemical engineering, modern equipments, shipbuilding and aviation, etc; modern service industries of guangzhou, such as finance, insurance, conference & exhibition, information service and cultural innovation, etc, are developing at high speed; strategic emerging industries, such as the industries of new-generation information technology, biological engineering, new material, new energy, energy saving & environment protection, new-energy automobile and ocean engineering, etc are showing dynamic momentum. south africa has the comparative advantage in industries such as metal product, jewelry and mineral, etc. both sides can well complement each other's advantages as far as industrial and product structures are concerned. the potential for cooperation between both sides is great and extensive.

三是双方精诚协作，具有良好的合作意愿。此次论坛，广州有90多位企业家和政府经贸部门的代表积极参与，涉及汽车、电子、机械、医药、轻工、服装、食品、酒店和矿业等各个方面。我们将积极开展一系列贸易促进活动，推动有比较优势产品进入南非市场，让南非人民享受到更多质优价廉的广州产品。今天看到如此众多的南非企业家到场，我们也感受到了你们的合作诚意。我相信，只要我们双方都有合作诚意，大家共同努力，一定会把双方经贸合作推向新的高度。

thirdly, both sides are willing to cooperate with each other with good faith. over 90 enterprisers and representatives from government authorities of economy and trade actively take part in this forum. the various business circles of guangzhou involved in this forum include the industries of automobile, electronics, machinery, medicine, garment, foodstuff, hotel and ore mining as well as light industry. we will actively carry out a series of activities for trade promotion, introduce products with comparative advantage to the south african market and let the people of south africa be able to enjoy more products which are made in guangzhou and attractive in price and quality. today, there are a large number of south african enterprisers attending this event. we feel your sincerity for cooperation. i believe that, with good faith of cooperation and joint efforts, the economic and trade cooperation of both sides will attain a yet higher goal.

since the establishment of diplomatic relations between china and south africa, a strategic partnership has been formed between both sides and high-level cadres and leaders of both countries also have exchanged visits frequently. this is the best time for the economic and trade cooperation between china and south africa, which is developing at the fastest pace now. we must join hands more closely and together grasp this precious opportunity for development. let's go to great lengths to push forward the economic and trade cooperation between guangzhou and south africa.

XX年南非世界杯主题曲《飘扬的旗帜》中有这样一句歌词，“凝聚在一起，让我们共同感受荣耀辉煌”(unify us, make us feel proud)。我相信，只要我们的心紧紧凝聚在一起，密切往来，互利合作，通过包括在座各位的共同努力，广州与南非特别是约翰内斯堡的经贸合作一定会有新的飞跃，我们一定能够共享经贸合作发展的荣耀和辉煌。
